Certification in Virginia

Although there is no specific board representing nutritionist certification in Virginia, but there is a certain Code of Virginia which has to be followed. It says that the board of health practitioners has kept minimum of education, experience and training to operate in this state. All the practitioners are entitled to use the names of Dietitian or Nutritionist if they keep up with these requirements. The Code of Virginia is §54.1-2710.

You should know that there is a Chapter 27.1 – Dietitians and Nutritionists available in the Code of Virginia. 54.1-2731 states prohibited terms; penalty of dietitians and nutritionist in this state. The requirements are as follows.


  • You should have a baccalaureate degree or higher in this state.
  • The degree should be in community nutrition, food and nutrition, nutritional sciences and human nutrition.
  • The degree you acquire should be from university which is accredited by the state.
  • You should also have some clinical experience which should be supervised as well as approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association.

You can even practice in this state if you have:

  • A current registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association.
  • A certificate which is active from the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists.
  • Gained accreditation by the Diplomats or Practitioners from American Board of Nutrition.
  • A dietitian or nutritionist license available with you and is active, provided by another state.

You could not use words of nutritionist, dietitian, licensed, certified or registered unless you fulfill all these obligations. If you do use them, then you will be subject to crime.

Nutritional Degree Programs

Both masters and doctoral degrees in human nutrition could be acquired in this state. They could be either on campus or through online nutrition schools.
