The California Department of Public Health provides licensure to work as a public health nutrition consultant.


One must have at least a master’s degree in one of these programs, nutrition, dietetics, public health nutrition, or other nutrition based study programs. One must have certification from the Commission of Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association.


The licensure examination is designed to evaluate one’s training as well as experience. It attempts to test ones,

  • Knowledge of nutritional sciences
  • Abilities to perform duties of a public health nutritionist
  • One must earn at least a minimum of 70% marks in the examination.


One must get registered from the Commission of Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association which is the governing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In order to gain registration one must be:

  • Over the age of 18
  • One must have completed their requirements including,
  • One must have at least a baccalaureate or higher qualification from a post secondary educational institute which is accredited from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges or another such accrediting authority.
  • One must have a minimum of 450 hours practical experience.
  • One has to earn the required marks in the examination provided by the State Department of Health Services.
