Which Mississippi Schools Offer Surgical Technology Programs?

Local and out-of-state students can attend an accredited college or university in Mississippi to study surgical technology. Surgical technology programs trains students in areas like assisting surgeons during operations, setting up the room used for operations, preparing patients for surgery, keeping surgical supply inventory count before and after procedure and medical terms for surgical equipment & instruments. The accredited institutions may help students to prepare for the National Surgical Technology Examination. When students complete the surgical technology program they may appear for the National Board Surgical Technology certification exam.

Mississippi Accredited Surgical Technology Institutions

Mississippi welcomes students to attend one of the accredited community colleges to study a surgical technology certificate or associates degree program. Some of the schools that offer the programs are the following:

Certificate programs may require students to complete up to forty hours or eight months. The associate program requires seventy or more credits and two years to receive a degree. Furthermore students might be required to maintain a C grade in all core courses throughout the program. Examples of some of the courses students may be required to attend are surgical pharmacology, medical termination and surgical technology. There are other courses including Mathematics, English and Algebra.

Opportunities for Surgical Technology Graduates

In Mississippi the number of employed surgical technologists was 1,450 based on statistics from the United States Department of Labor in May 2012. The annual average salary was estimated at approximately $33,000. Surgical technology graduates can find employment at medical hospitals, emergency care unit facilities, outpatient surgery clinics, physicians and dentists.

Graduates normally begin at entry level and receive on average between $14.00 thru $18.00 an hour. Experienced and certified surgical technologists may earn on average $19.00 to $28.00 an hour. Surgical technologists who work in hospitals tend to earn higher wages. These institutions most likely require surgical technologists to have a certification.
