One rewarding profession worth considering is as a Surgical Technician.

Surgical Technicians are pretty important people in the health care industry. They help doctors and nurses care for patients when they are getting ready for surgery, throughout the procedure and even after the surgery is finished. They are also responsible for making sure all of the equipment and supplies that will be used during a surgical procedure are in proper working order and have the skills to fix most of the problems that can occur.

There are 17 accredited Surgical Technology programs in Illinois schools.  Surprisingly, only two of them are located in Chicago. This means that wherever you live in Illinois, there is probably a school offering an Associate or Certificate program in Surgical Technology near you.

While this is obviously a rewarding career where you get to play an important role in helping people, it is also a good paying job. The Association of Surgical Technicians reports that Illinois Surgical Technicians earn an average of $19.94 an hour.  That is a lot more than you can make in most of the jobs you can find.

While you may never become a famous celebrity recognized by only your first name as a surgical technician, you will get the satisfaction of knowing that every day you go to work is an opportunity to make a positive difference in peoples’ lives.
