Allied Health Schools in Ohio

One of the fastest growing industries in the USA today is Healthcare.  In the state of Ohio, allied healthcare professionals are in high demand.  The term allied health refers to some 200 different career options encompassed in the health care field.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the demand for allied health care professionals will increase up to 36% within the next ten years.  Current estimations show that there are approximately 5 million allied health care providers who work in 80 different types of professions.

There are two types of allied health professionals:  1. Allied Health Technicians and 2.  Allied Health Therapists & Technologists.  The education and salaries vary greatly between the two types but also depending on the position selected.

Technicians (Assistants):

The length of education for positions that fall under this category is two years or less.  They work directly under the supervision of Technologists or Therapists.  Due to shorter periods of education, Technicians are able to find work quickly.  Salaries can vary depending on the location and the type of position that is held.  According to the American Medical Association, salaries can range from as low as $15,100 up to $41,537.  Positions available in these fields are Medical Library Technicians, Physical Therapy Assistants, Radiologist Assistant, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Respiratory Therapy Technicians and Recreation Therapy Technicians.

Therapists & Technologists:

Educational requirements for these positions are more in depth and include learning procedural skills.  These students learn patient evaluation, diagnosis conditions, and how to set up treatment plans.  Many of these careers require obtaining a bachelors degree and additional post education.  For this reason, the salary ranges are higher in these fields.  For example, an Art Therapist could earn up to $32,000 per year while an Anesthesiologist Assistant would have a starting salary around $95,000 – both possess the same level of education.
