Acupuncture Schools in Michigan

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese method that is used to encourage the body’s natural healing and improve its functionality. This method is used to prevent various illnesses and treat several medical conditions.  Acupuncture is performed by applying heat or electrical stimulation or by inserting needles in specific points in the body.

Students can take a three-year masters degree program in acupuncture which offers a mix of theoretical and practical courses where they can take what they’ve learned in classroom lectures to gain hands-on experience with patients. It is advised to choose schools that are accredited by Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) like Pacific College of Oriental Medicine.

Examples of courses that students get to take are treatment techniques, acupuncture theory, history of acupuncture, meridian therapy and so on. Some schools also offer doctoral programs in acupuncture and oriental program, which incorporates western medicine in the program.

Graduates of Contemporary Medical Acupuncture programs from regionally accredited colleges or universities in United States receive a program completion certificate. This is provided by the US Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation that recognizes the degree. The program completion certificate may allow one to sit for the Acupuncture National Board Certification Examination (NCE) which is the only examination process for health care professionals trained in principles and practice of contemporary medical acupuncture. The state of Michigan requires acupuncture professionals to treat patients under supervision of a medical doctor.

Professionals can join and follow the Michigan Board of Acupuncture that takes the responsibility of promoting and protecting the public’s safety, health and welfare. The board sets standards and establishes minimal entry-level competency of all acupuncturists.

The state of Michigan allows practice for acupuncturists through a ruling by the Board of Medical Examiners. Graduates can work as professionals for Acupuncture Healthcare Associates of Michigan where they can assist individuals in improving their health and wellness by offering health care services which complement traditional medical care.
